For Such A Time

For Such A Time

The story of Esther is such a beautiful love story. It has romance, danger, death, and the girl becomes a queen. But more importantly, it has courage and confidence.

Two things that a lot of girls and women are lacking today.

Mickey, the young lady pictured above, has courage and confidence. She probably has enough for a lot of women who are lacking it. Mickey recently competed in a beauty pageant in Indiana. I grew up in Indiana with Mickey’s mom, but I have never personally met Mickey.

Mickey has been in a lot of beauty pageants, carried many titles, and she has spoken in front of thousands on more than one occasion. She has also touched more lives than she will ever realize.

Let’s go back a few thousand years to 492BC and look at a Jewish exile named Hadasseh. Hadasseh was not born of royalty. Her parents died when she was young and so she was raised by her uncle, Mordecai. Hadasseh eventually changed her name to Esther, which means star and happiness. She soon becamepart of King Ahasuerus’ harem. Some called him King Xerxes. When the king’s current wife was “put aside” for disobedience, a new queen was needed.

Esther became part of a beauty pageant (harem). The harem consisted of young ladies from all over Persia. I am sure they were the most beautiful women in the land. The beauty treatments they received went on for 12 months just to be prepared to stand before the king. Esther found favor with the King. She had a beauty that surpassed her outward appearance. Esther was found to be more beautiful than all the other women, but she had a secret. She was a Jew. Her uncle had instructed her to tell no one. Being Jewish could have gotten Esther killed.

Mickey has a “secret”. Mickey was born with Down Syndrome. It really isn’t a secret, but it is the thing that could hold Mickey back. Mickey could have used it as an excuse to not try, to not compete, to not excel, to not shine. She could have used that or a myriad of other medical conditions to not fulfill her purpose.

Think of the excuses you have spoken throughout your life. I am not fast enough, smart enough, or creative. I am too fat, short, tall, or thin. Far too often we mentally defeat ourselves before we even try. I know I am guilty of it. We don’t even give ourselves a chance to see what we could do with God on our side.

Not Esther! Not Mickey!

In a moment that defined them and changed the world, they went for it.

I can picture the now Queen Esther bursting through the doors of the King’s private chambers, risking her very life, to save the Jews; her people. That took courage, confidence, and knowing who she was in God. In Esther 4:14, Esther’s uncle says some very powerful words to her. If you keep quiet at a time like this….perhaps you were made for such a time.

Mickey did not have to enter this particular beauty pageant. She has been in several beauty pageants designed for girls with special abilities (disabilities). She even had to give up one title/crown to even enter this pageant. Why even enter? Why enter a contest that is full of women that society says are beautiful and that same society labels Mickey very differently?

But Mickey doesn’t listen to society and she was called for such a time as this. She listens to “the voice of truth”. Her participation changed people radically. For Mickey’s talent portion, she danced to Revelation Songby Kari Jobe. If you have never heard it, listen.

With all creation I sing
Praise to the King of Kings
You are my everything
And I will adore You

As we find ourselves in the middle of a nasty presidential race, maybe Mickey was made for such a time as this. A time where mud-slinging, name calling, and the dirtiest of derogatory remarks are at a record-setting level. Mickey is peeling off labels one at a time. Down Syndrome, leukemia, heart surgeries, Riley Kid, and disabled do NOT define Mickey.  She is teaching us to peel off labels put there by ourselves and others. She is replacing all of those misplaced labels with the ones that matter. Labels like “fearfully and wonderfully made”, “child of God”, “more than a conqueror”, “accepted”, and “set free”.

Mickey is using ALL that God gave her, all that God allowed to be upon her for His glory. She takes her proverbial Alabaster box everywhere she goes and pours out her love for the Master in all that she does. She is a world-changer just like Esther. And just like Esther, Mickey’s beauty is more than skin deep. She radiates the love of God and no makeup, no designer dress can give that to a woman that doesn’t already possess it in her heart.

Are you using all that has been given to you? Do you realize your special abilities? Do you know you were called for such a time as this? Find your courage and confidence. Then remember, you are the Princess Daughter of the Most High God. Dust off the negativity, self-doubt, and fear from your tiara and wear it with pride.
