Not My Co-Pilot
While driving to work, in the fast lane of three lanes, I noticed a bumper sticker on the car in front of me. It read, “God is my co-pilot”. Here are my speed rules when driving on a 3-lane roadway. The slow lane is for those doing the speed limit and under. The middle lane is for those doing the speed limit and up to five mph over. The passing lane is for those that are pretending to be on the Autobahn in Germany. I was in the passing lane, but only because I was turning soon. It’s my story, I will tell it my way. The woman with the bumper sticker, according to my rules, should have been in the slow lane. So, I begin to “talk” to her. Of course I called her the worst name a driver in Florida can be called, “Snowbird”. Then I stated that God needed to tell her to get on the gas.
As I continued to drive, I really began to think about her bumper sticker. Is God really my co-pilot? According to Webster’s a co-pilot is defined as, “a qualified pilot who assists or relieves the pilot but is not in command“. I am pretty certain that God not only should be, but IS in command, control of all things; including my driving. Obviously, He is over qualified to be a “co” anything. So is He my pilot? If He is the pilot that means I have no say in the direction I take, the stops I make, or the destination. I am simply a passenger in my own life. It is obvious that we have free will to do whatever we want. Adam and Eve had one rule to follow; don’t eat this particular fruit. They had free will, ate the fruit, were kicked out of the garden, and here we are today. Thanks to the lovely “Snowbird” in front of me, here I am today wondering who should be driving my car.
God isn’t my co-pilot because He is in control, command. He isn’t my pilot because I have free will. That can only mean that God is my GPS!
He is my guide, if I allow Him. Matthew 16:24 “Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.”” Matthew 4:19 “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” There are plenty more verses where we see Jesus asking, telling us to follow Him. I have often prayed that I would follow Him so closely that I would be covered in the dust His sandals kick up. He is my guide. He is my lighthouse in troubled seas. He is my hope on the horizon of a difficult valley. Psalm 37:23 states, “The LORD directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives.” Isn’t that what a GPS does? Directs us step by step and turn by turn. What happens when we veer off that recommended path? The GPS starts telling us to make a u-turn. 2 Chronicles 7:14 tells us to, “turn from our wicked ways”.
If you are feeling lost, without direction, stuck at an intersection, or stranded on the highway of hurt, turn on your GPS. God Provided Steps. Luke 11:9 “So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.” We all have this GPS in us. We often don’t want to hear it. We turn the volume up on everything else to drown out the sound of His direction. Jonah ignored the GPS and we know where that got him. We have our own agenda. We don’t ask God where He wants us. STOP! Ask, seek, knock, and tune into that gentle nudge to get on the difficult and narrow road that will lead you to the most incredible destination; the hands of God. Yes, the path may be bumpy. Yes, there will be easy walks. Yes, there will be times you want to give up and take the wide and easy path. Yes, He will be beside you, even when you don’t sense Him.
